Nursing Pillow
Sunday, August 15, 2010
All of the crafting I've been doing lately has been decidedly baby-centric. When purchasing all of our baby gear, I couldn't help but notice the exorbitant prices asked for nursing pillows. After checking a few out, I decided that I could take a shot at making my own for a fraction of the price.
Fabric cut and waiting to be serged

Armed with several meters of floral fabric that I bought on sale awhile back but for which I had no project in mind + this pattern found on L'Arbre à bébés, all I needed was a zipper, styrofoam balls or stuffing and I was good to go.
Ready to sew together and stuff (baby bump in lower left-hand corner)

I'm very happy with how this project turned out. The pillow can be twisted or positioned as needed to make it comfortable for both the baby and myself / my husband. Most of the nursing pillows I saw in the stores were filled with styrofoam balls, but I used a polyester stuffing instead and think it's probably more comfortable because of it. The pillow is put to good use it every night when I give my baby her last bottle before putting her to bed.

Apparently once you're done with using the pillow for nursing / bottle feeding, it can have a second life as a pillow to help your baby to sit upright. After that, I guess I'll repurpose the fabric to make toys, a patchwork quilt, who knows what...

This is a great idea for the postpartum mothers who have just given birth. I also like the fact that you can reuse the pillow later. You should check out my site at http://pacificnurse.blogspot.com
